Summary / Overview (āĻŽূāϞ āĻাā§ą)

"Rip Van Winkle" is an enchanting story about a kind but extremely lazy Dutch villager who lived at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Loved by children but constantly nagged by his wife, Dame Van Winkle, for avoiding work, Rip decides one autumn day to escape to the mountains with his faithful dog, Wolf, and his gun to avoid her continuous harassment.

In the mountains, he encounters a strange, funny-looking man carrying a heavy barrel. Kind-hearted Rip helps him carry it to a hidden cave where he sees other odd men playing a game of ninepins. After drinking a mysterious liquid from their barrel, Rip falls into a deep sleep. When he eventually wakes up and returns to his village, he is shocked to find unfamiliar faces and realizes that his beard has grown a foot long—he had unknowingly slept for twenty long years!
