đ Quick Chapter Summary
This lesson is a short school play based on Shakespeare's famous story. Bassanio wants to marry Portia but has no money to travel to her. He asks his rich friend Antonio for help. Antonio borrows money from a wicked moneylender named Shylock. Shylock hates Antonio and makes a cruel deal: if Antonio cannot repay the loan in three months, Shylock will cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. When Antonio's ships fail to return in time, Shylock takes him to court to claim his flesh. However, Portia dresses up as a clever lawyer and saves Antonio by saying Shylock can take the flesh, but without shedding a single drop of blood, as blood is not mentioned in the agreement. Shylock is defeated and punished.
